Hinweis auf eine gemeinsame Veranstaltung der Heinrich Böll Stiftung

Thema: Zwischen War-Blogs und Informationsministerium. Medien und
öffentliche Wahrnehmung nach dem Irak-Krieg.
Termin: Do, 22.5., 19 Uhr, Galerie der Heinrich Böll Stiftung, Hackesche
Höfe, Berlin
Fragestellung: Kriege katalysieren oft mediale und technische
Entwicklungen. Ziel der Diskussion ist es, aufzuarbeiten, wie sich das
Verhältnis von Krieg, Medien und öffentlicher Wahrnehmung mit dem Irak-
Krieg verschoben hat. Mehrere Beobachtungen bilden dabei die Eckpunkte
der Debatte: die enge Verbindung von Militär und Unterhaltungsindustrie
im Konzept des "eingebetteten Berichterstatters", die sich wechselseitig
aufschaukelnden Inszenierungen des irakischen Informationsministers und
der USA, aber auch die erstaunlich kritische und selbstreflexive
Diskussion in den Medien über Medienberichterstattung, die zunehmende
Bedeutung von Al-Jazerra und schließlich die Tatsache, dass sich mit dem
erwachsen gewordenen Internet erstmals ein globaler alternativer Zugang
zu unzensierten Informationen angeboten hat.

War is the major social issue that has pushed all others to the side
since shortly after the turn of the millennium. Those who believed that
more peaceful times would follow the end of the Cold War were forced to
learn a lesson: War remains the father of all things, even though its

Interzone is a new series of programs that De Balie intends to
develop for the new program season, devoted to interdisciplinary
explorations across the confines of existing artistic disciplines, in
the cross-over areas of experimental cinema, media art, sound art and
performance.
For this zero-edition of Interzone we have brought artists together
who make explicit use of documentary materials in their work, while
they have no intention to create an actual documentary. Taking this
approach, it becomes inescapable that the artist has to articulate a
different position towards the documentary materials, their origins
and their context. How is this position defined? Why not rather make
a straight documentary? What is the influence of the original
material on the aesthetics of the work and the practice of the artist?

Ulrike Ottinger

This (very) long documentary was originally created for the eleventh
edition of the Documenta (2002), the mayor contemporary art
exhibition organised every 5 years in Kassel, Germany. Ottinger is an
acclaimed and highly idiosyncratic feminist fiction film director.
For this project she pursued an almost ethnographic methodology. From
her home town Berlin she made numerous journeys to travels to the
former 'East'. These journeys took her amongst others to Odessa and
Istanbul, but also to many unknown and little cared about places in
the country-side. The film, more than 6 hours in length, can be seen
as a personal travel diary.
George Legrady - An Anecdoted Archive from the Cold War
(Hungary, 1994)
In Legrady's work two different forms of writing history collide:
Legrady's personal history as an émigré out of Hungary after the
popular uprising of 1956 was crushed by Soviet army forces, is
confronted with the official writing of history of the Cold War.
Legrady subverts the official hierarchical construction of history.
From personal memorabilia, propaganda materials, films, and sound
recordings he creates a personal anecdoted archive, a museum for his
personal history.

Chris Marker - Immemory One
(France, 1997)
Marker engages the viewer in a subtle play. He presents an extensive
archive of his personal life, his relationship to the things, the
world (comparable to Legrady). This impression turns out to be
misleading, however. Marker continuously moves between his actual
personal history and a fictional existence; memories of events he was
never part of, while making it apparent that they are truly his
own.... The treacherous character of memory seems to be the starting
point for his kaleidoscopic self-image. Marker seems to resist any
authoritarian information-order and the illusion of universal history.

Jon Wozencroft & Chris Watson "Weather Report"
Jon Wozencroft, founder of the Touch-label, graphic designer and
video artist will present video works that accompany two new
soundscapes by Chris Watson.
Chris Watson makes sound recordings of rare animal species, natural
phenomena and specific locations. Beside his work for a.o. the BBC,
Watson, who in the past was involved with Cabaret Voltaire and the
Hafler Trio, nowadays also produces works in the genre of
"soundscapes". "Ol-Olool-O" is the name of a mountain range in the
west of Kenya, which because of its position has a mayor influence on
the climate conditions and thus on the animal life and the local
population. The work, produced only with field recordings, is
nonetheless marked by an exceptional dramatic tension.
"Vatnajökull" is named after the Vatnajökull-glacier in Iceland.
Watson follows the journey of the ice to the sea and offers a 'view'
into the various animal colonies and habitats on its way.
With solemn imagery, largely consisting of nature footage, Wozencroft
creates a visual pendant of Watson's compositions.

The Hungarian film maker Péter Forgács (Budapest, 1950) is one of
the most prominent representatives of the so-called found footage
film makers. In the travel report The Danube Exodus Forgács documents
the Jewish exodus out of Hungary at the beginning of World War II.

In ANGELOS' FILM Forgács uses amateur movies of the Greek marine
officer and patrician Angelos Papanastassiou, who filmed the

John Oswald "Plexure", "Dab", and "Braziliaires"
Plunderphonics is the name Oswald gives to his music. His composition
"Dab" is constructed from hundreds of sound fragments of Michael
Jackson's "I'm Bad". The statement is that compositions that consists
entirely of samples can be highly original works in their own right,
there should be no restrictions to the use of samples. This position
has made Oswald into a controversial composer and a spokesperson for
the No Copyright movement.
"Plexure" is a staccato of oh's, ah's and yeah's. A flow of sound
libraries of the last 30 years of popmusic history. "Braziliaires" is
a radiophonic diary of a journey to Brasil, and deals provocatively
with the relationships between cultures. In contradiction to the
soundscapes almost all sounds are imitations of the original recorded
sound materials.

DJ Olive "Composition #11" and "Perpetual Soundcheck"
DJ Olive is a turntablist, a composer and musician, who uses the
turntable as his instrument. He calls his compositions Vinyl Scores.
DJ Olive makes collections of recordings and stores these sound
fragments on LP's as if they were his music scores.
As a DJ he creates open compositions by continuously making new
combinations between archived sounds.
In "Composition #11", a palette of sounds of his immediate living
environment, DJ Olive attempts to arrive at a personal
interpretation. "Perpetual Soundcheck" takes the listener to the
urban metropolis of New York; ranging from the pulsating urban sounds
to a loud siesta.

A hallucinating essay-film where the London ring-way (the M25) is the
starting point for a delirious multitude of poetic and intellectual
associations. The basis for the film was the book by the same title
by Ian Sinclair, in which the writer tells about his journey on foot
along the almost 200 kilometres long road and the multitude of
observations and connections that emerged during the long march.
Chris Petit's intention was not to make a film about this march, but
to start from the trance-like state that the average car driver can
be put in by the endless car drives along such a road.

The award is organized in collaboration between IAMAS

The award consists of a 10.000 USD money award & a 6-month
artist-in-residence stay at the IAMAS <http://www.iamas.ac.jp>,
Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences and the International
Academy of Media Arts and Sciences in Ogaki, Gifu Japan.
a) Award Money:
The total money award of USD10,000 is provided by the Higashiyama Fund
set-up and managed by the National Federation of UNESCO Associations in
Japan (NFUAJ) and given by the Director-General of UNESCO.
In addition, IAMAS provides a 6-months salary for the 1st price winner
who will be invited as artist-in-residence to IAMAS. This salary is
around 2,100,000 yen (~ 18.000.- USD) for 6 months (the exact amount
will depend on the number of years' professional experience that the
artist has had, for example, an artist with 2-6 years' experience will
receive 350,000 yen per month, totalling 2,100,000 yen for 6 months).
The components of the Award are:
1st prize: USD 5,000 & 6 months artist-in-residency at IAMAS
2nd prize: USD 3,000
3rd prize: USD 2,000
b) 6-month Artist-in-Residency at IAMAS
IAMAS <http://www.iamas.ac.jp/E/index-html.html> will welcome the main
award winner as artist-in-residence

to give the young artist the chance to work in a very well equipped,
high-tech environment where he/she can realise the chosen project and
benefit from cultural exchange with IAMAS staff and students.
IAMAS will provide the artist with a monthly salary during this time
(depending on the numers of years' professional experience up to
2,100,000.- yen for 6 months) as well as travel expenses incurred when
joining and leaving IAMAS. Furthermore, IAMAS will rent an apartment for
the artist-in-residence. However, the artist is asked to pay for part of
the rent.
The artist-in-residence will be at IAMAS from October 2003 until March
2004. During this time, the artist will develop his/her work, based on
his/her award-winning project proposal. The final artwork will be
presented at the 5th World Forum for Media Art and Culture exhibition to
be held in Ogaki, Japan in March 2004. This is when the award winner and
his/her work will be introduced to the public

Project proposals in the field of digital art (including web art,
interactive art, media installation, digital music, performance or other
media art forms) are accepted.
1. One project proposal per artist is accepted. The official language
for all submissions is English.
2. The proposed project must not be an already finished artwork.
3. Total length of the project proposal: 5-7 pages, A4 format.
4. The project proposal must include: title, 500-word abstract, concept
of the work, project description, technical description, drawings and
set-up plan as well as a timetable for carrying out the work during the
6 months as artist-in-residence at IAMAS.
5. A short biography (2-3 pages, A4) including education, career,
exhibition list and list of activities as well as contact address
(including telephone number and email address) and 2 passport photos are
required.
6. All submissions must reach IAMAS by postal mail by 12 July 2003.

· The award focuses on supporting young, talented people involved in
media art.
· The age limit for submitting artists is 35 years.
· The award will be given to project proposals, not to finished artworks.
· Project proposals should relate to the theme of the award.
· The main award winner's project proposal will be carried out at IAMAS
during a special artist-in-residence period provided by IAMAS.
· We especially encourage submissions by artists from developing countries.

In our increasingly diverse societies, it is essential to ensure
harmonious interaction among people and groups with plural, varied and
dynamic cultural identities as well as their willingness to live
together" (UNESCO Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity, 2
November 2001)
But how does technology shape cultural identity and how has it changed
the way we live together? Can digital technology promote dialogue
between people from different cultures, creating a better, fairer and
more peaceful world where cultural diversity and tolerance prevail? And
how can an artist's vision and sensibility reflect and contribute to
cultural diversity and digital pluralism?
These are the questions we want to address through the "Digital
Pluralism - UNESCO Digital Arts Award 2003 at IAMAS". We encourage
artists to reflect on the theme of cultural diversity, digital pluralism
and social interaction, and to send project proposals for a media
artwork that considers these topics and that can be realised during a
6-month artist-in-residence period at the Institute of Advanced Media
Arts and Sciences (IAMAS) in Gifu, Japan.

Doron Golan-Goldstein was born in Haifa, Israel,
and has been living and working in New York since
1979.
Doron has worked in dv, computer animation and
media. Since 1998 he has been working primarily
with quicktime streaming.
Doron's works is concerned with cinematic and
digifi art presentation and engaged in
reproductions of contemporary social phenomenas.
Studied fine arts and comparative literature in
Haifa University, Israel, and fine arts at The
Free Academy of Den-Haag, and The Arts Student
League in NY.
One person exhibitions include: M-13 Gallery and
Moving Image Gallery in NY. Group exhibitions
include: American Fine Arts Gallery, The
Alternative Museum, and the New York Digital Salon.

Nesses tempos em que a vida e a comunicação pareciam transcorrer somente por uma tela, quando a maioria está submetida à desesperança, a Arte Postal se apresenta como instrumento de estímulo de nosso potencial criativo e de comunicação entre os seres humanos.
Na Arte Postal participa quem quiser. Não há seleção nem jurados, não se comercializa a obra e o correio é utilizado como meio de envio.
O Projeto Água tem como objetivo abrir um espaço de reflexão sobre o tema da convocatória; Seguir trabalhando em distintos âmbitos desde a proposta artística, articulada com os conhecimentos científicos e técnicos, de forma horizontal, autogestionada, baseada no respeito mútuo.

Um elemento necessário para a vida se transformou em um NEGÓCIO. No Brasil, como em muitos países do mundo, a água já não é mais de quem habita este solo, mas das grandes empresas estatais e privadas. Essas empresas estão ocupando a gestão da água potável e da água mineral em todo planeta, e por outro lado, ganhando muito dinheiro.
Todos temos direito à usufruir dos recursos naturais para assegurar nosso direito a vida, solidariamente aos demais seres e espécies, viventes que povoam o planeta e com as futuras gerações. A gestão da água deve estar nas mão de cada um de nós e se trabalharmos de forma individual e coletiva, poderemos concretizar essa utopia.
